BOATING ACCIDENTS
IN ARIZONA ARE COMMON

Around 100,000 boats are registered throughout Arizona each year, and all of these vessels have access to most lakes and rivers in the state. With so many watercrafts operating on any given day, boating accidents are a possibility. And although boating fatalities have decreased in the last few years, recreational boating is still to blame for thousands of injuries and several hundred deaths in Arizona. These boating accidents include:

  • Capsizing
  • Collisions with another vessel or structure
  • Sinking, flooding
  • Falling overboard
  • Fire
  • Explosions

Most deaths from boating accidents are from capsized boats or people falling overboard, with 90% of the victims drowning. Furthermore, statistics show that the majority of accidents are due to the operators’ lack of experience or inattention.

Investigators have also found another alarming cause of recent boating accidents – alcohol consumption. Intoxicated boaters are prone to recklessness and driving at unsafe speeds. The effects of alcohol consumption – such as diminished coordination, dehydration, susceptibility to hypothermia, and impaired judgment – become more life-threatening when in water. Operating a boat while under intoxication risks the lives of everybody on board.

Just like DWI or DUI, operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or prohibited substances is illegal in Arizona. Anybody found guilty is subject to stiff penalties, which may include fines, prison time, and/or community service, among others.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

To prevent boating accidents or severe damage, should an accident occur, boat operators and passengers have to keep these safety measures in mind:

  • Always wear life jackets and dress for possible immersion.
  • Do not drink alcohol while on the water.
  • Be aware that cold weather is more dangerous: there are fewer boaters and patrols to rescue those in distress, and the water is much more chilled.
  • Make use of available distress-alerting and position-indicating technologies when in large bodies of water.

In case of a boating accident, the state of Arizona requires the boat operator to file an accident report with the proper authorities. The operator must report accidents where the following conditions occur:

  • Lost of life due to the accident
  • Property damage or complete loss of the vessel
  • Injuries requiring medical treatment beyond first aid
  • The disappearance of a person from the boat

Death and injury reports must be filed within 48 hours of the incident, while property damage have to be reported within ten days. If the boat operator is unable to file the report, the owner may do so in his place.
